2019 Chinese Culture Festival: Food, Games, and Souvenirs

By Huimin

Chinese cuisine is a significant element in Chinese culture and Austin’s 2019 Chinese Culture Festival couldn’t succeed without Chinese food. Board member Wendy Wei was in charge of organizing food and drink sections for the Festival. There were Chinese food vendors representing different cuisines from various regions. The dumplings and buns from Bao’d Up are typical northern Chinese food, while Dim Sum items from New Fortune Chinese Seafood Restaurant are from the southern province of Guangdong. Look Noodles & More brought braised pork rice and tea eggs. China Family’s spicy chicken is a typical dish from Sichuan cuisine. There was a long line for Mr. Hong’s Rou-Jia-Mo, Chinese Hamburgers as Americans call it, which is a typical street food from northwestern province of Shaanxi. Enjoying authentic Chinese food is a way to show our cultural appreciation and we thank the organizers, food vendors, and volunteers for the fabulous food at the Chinese Culture Festival.

Many volunteers from the Greater Austin area high schools helped out with game and cultural souvenir sections. There were a total of five games: Through the Fence, Ring Toss, Throw Pong, Balloons & Darts, and Lucky Ball Catch. All games were designed and made by ACAN volunteer William with the help of the ACAN President Peter Chao. Many kids and adults had a great fun playing the games. The cultural souvenir booths were organized by board member Debbie Wang. The souvenirs included Peking Opera Masks, Chinese fan and decor, as well as Chinese traditional dress Qi Pao. The souvenir booths attracted a lot of festival goers and it was a great success.
