Student Essay – By Jasmine Sun
I never understood why someone would willingly volunteer. The concept of working without expecting payment left me bewildered. After a year of giving back, the idea no longer seems so foreign. Volunteering at establishments such as CAMP Camp and The Salvation Army made me realize how much of a difference a single person could make in the community.
I started my CAMP Camp journey in 2022 on the 2nd week of July. I had no previous experience working with the disabled community but was intrigued by the concept. Within my first week, I was shocked by the inclusivity and acceptance of this organization. Being here taught me to love beyond differences and celebrate diversity.
CAMP Camp has helped me to become a better version of myself. At camp, people are recognized apart from their disabilities. Nowadays, the impaired community has been categorized within a common stereotype. However, here everyone is welcomed apart from their capabilities. CAMP Camp’s mission “To strengthen and inspire individuals with special needs” has not only been achieved again and again but the results have had lasting effects. Seeing campers build confidence and try new activities, usually offered to non-disabled kids, has encouraged me to continue my volunteer experience here.
The Salvation Army’s objective coincides directly with ACAN’s mission to “Serve our community and Foster our heritage”. Last December, I volunteered at their warehouse preparing Christmas presents for less fortunate children. Seeing strangers gather together to improve somebody’s year showed me a different perspective on life. It amazed me how great of an impact something like a gift or toy could bring on someone.
My time at Camp Camp and The Salvation Army has taught me lessons of love, kindness, and accessibility. These moments have motivated me to continue my involvement and increase my devotion to others.
