Important Update
Starting from 2022, we are simplifying the application process for the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) and the ACAN Star Leadership Award (ASLA). Please read the blog post here.
What is the ASLA?
- ACAN STAR is a project-based program for youths in 6th to 12th grade in the Greater Austin area to develop leadership skills.
- The objective is to support youths in finding opportunities for mentorship, strengthening teamwork skills, and serving the community.
- ACAN STAR projects will ideally involve multi-year commitments from participating youths. This way, participants may learn how to sustainably maintain commitment to a long-term project, track their own yearly growth, and develop skillsets that will benefit their future ambitions. Evidence of holding long term involvement on a project is particularly attractive for universities and employers.
- Youth can submit project proposals to the youth committee at any time. ACAN will assign adults mentors/advisors, provide feedback/appraisals and budget/marketing support if needed.
- Unlike ASLA, there is no citizenship/permanent residency requirements to apply for ASLA. But you will need to have an ACAN membership (either individual or family).
- The review committee uses a combination of criteria to evaluate the individual and team impact, as well as creativity, initiative and leadership qualities demonstrated by the applicant(s).
